MINING QUICKSTART

If you just want to earn some quick cash, need a refresher course, or simply want a quick checklist to make sure you don’t forget your limpets, this guide has you covered.

WHAT TO MINE

At the time of writing, you are best to go mining Painite unless the price for Low Temperature Diamonds (LTD) is at least twice as much. VOs are fun, you may want to mine for Bromellite for engineering, but you need to know what you’re going for before you do it. Use the Mining Resources Quickstart, or just plan to head to good old Hyades Sector DB-X D1-112.

SHIP PREP

You likely have a mining ship prepped, and you either want to call it to the relevant location, or fly to the location in there. Hyades Sector DB-X D1-112 2 is 170Ly from Audheim, and my mining ship has a jump range of ~37LY. So its only a few jumps. But you may want to use your taxi and then call in your mining ship. Up to you. If you plan to use your taxi to return, make sure you’ve got cargo space to get back again.

Before you depart, ensure your ship has:

Laser Mining: Mining Lasers (size 2), Prospector Limpet Controller (A-rated), Collector Limpet Controller (1 per MW of mining laser power, so 6 for a 2x2D), Refinery (A rated), Cargo Racks, Detailed Surface Scanner

Deep Core Mining: Pulse Wave Analyser*, Seismic Charge Launcher*, Prospector Limpet Controller, Collector Limpet Controller, Refinery, Cargo Racks, Detailed Surface Scanner

*adding these two to a laser mining build will give you an all-purpose build.

Obviously builds vary, you may want 2 x collectors running on a laser build and not have space on a VO build, but this is just a quick guide. For more details see our dedicated Mining page.

***AND DON’T FORGET YOUR LIMPETS***

FLY TO MINING SYSTEM

As it sounds. When you get to the mining system, head to the correct planet. You may want to stop at a close station for a refuel before mining if you don’t have a fuel scoop. Of course, there may be local Fleet Carriers offering these services. In the absence of which, or in the interests of stability, for Hyades Sector DB-X d1-112, the station is:

Leibniz Depot // Bundhar for M ships
Kurland City // Gurabru for ships

FLY TO MINING PLANET

As it sounds. When you get to the mining system, head to the correct planet. For Hyades Sector DB-X d1-112, the planet is: 2 ring A.

As you get close, orient yourself so you’re face-on to the rings, and slow down when you get to approx 0.3Ls from the planet. Take your DSS and you’ll now find your targets in the LHS Navigation Panel.

The usual best spot to show is shown in the screenshot below: 1945 / 3/11/2020. You’re aiming to land between the two hotspots where they meet the rings.

ACTUALLY GO MINING

Despite remembering limpets escaping us all, mining itself is muscle memory. You’ll maybe want to remember a few things:

  • Make sure you’ve got time, or heatsinks. If you log in and out, you’ll attract pirates. Check your controller won’t disconnect if you’re going to come and go.
  • When you drop in, wait 2-3 mins until the auto-pirates scan you and move on. If you’re logging back in to continue a session, fire a heatsink as you arrive, and all pips to ENG, boost and heatsink for 2-3 mins and you won’t be detected.
  • Set up your Fire Groups if you’ve been using the ship for other things.

Either read on for the more common Laser Mining, or skip to Core Mining below to get the cheat-sheet on core asteroids.

LASER MINING REFRESHER COURSE

Here’s the brief rundown:

  • Set up your heading, so you don’t double back. More advanced/regular miners may wish to make an asteroid map themselves, or use something like this, from r/eliteminers.
  • Fire your prospectors at several asteroids. When they land, you’ll see the % of your desired resource within the asteroid. Check each one in your LHS Contacts.
  • Go up close, fire mining lasers with collector limpets deployed (no target, so they pick up everything). Scoop ’em up. Check all the other asteroids you prospected.
  • Reboot your prospector limpet controller to kill the old ones, move a little closer on your bearing, rinse and repeat.

Remember pip control, so you have shields to stop ‘love taps’, engine power to boost to a new area, and weapon power to run your mining lasers. You can also use deploying the cargo scoop to aid you in more precise maneuvres.

SELL YOUR WARES

Once you’re full up, its time to sell! Generally you’ll be headed to the best selling station, but you may wish to use a local fleet carrier if you’re intending on doing a few short-haul trips from the asteroid field to the carrier, rather than one big haul.

Don’t forget if you have got 50 excess Bromellite you can use it to unlock Bill Turner, or 10 Painite for Selene Jean if you’re at this stage of your engineering unlocks.

When you come to sell a full hold, you may find the price you got from EDTools, EDDB, Inara or wherever you got it from, is a LOT lower. This is because you and/or other commanders have exceeded the station demand. A good work around which can yield up to 25% more sales total is to sell 100t, log out, wait 10 mins, then log in again and sell another 100t. Rinse and repeat for 30-40 minutes and your final couple of loads should fetch the quoted market rate. If you have time, its well worth doing this.
